I (Ms. Krooss) was fortunate enough to get asked by the district to co-lead a teacher training session on January 5th (while all the kids are enjoying a final day of break!) on creating and managing effective, independent literacy work. Ms. Gomez and I both work hard to create strong, confident, and independent readers who LOVE to read. While we pull small reading groups or work with individual students, the rest of the class is hard at work on various tasks including Read to Self, Read to Others, Listen to Reading, and Work on Writing. As part of my presentation, I have been busy documenting what we do in Room 3, and I created a short video. Though the video was made for other teachers, I thought fourth grade students and families might also want to take a look!

Hello Families,
First, I apologize for the delay since the last update! Ms. Gomez and I are fortunate to have just received brand new work computers from RCSD, which makes posting pictures and videos so much easier...so watch out for many future posts! We have been busy, busy, busy since the last post! We celebrated Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas, had parent-teacher conferences, and held a wonderful PBL presentation (separate post to come!). In between all of that, we made time for lots of reading, writing, and math. I hope families are busy enjoying Holiday Break! Please remember to play JiJi, practice multiplication, and read over break. I am having a great time with my family in Lake Tahoe, but I am also excited to get back and see all of my students. See you in 2015! Love, Ms. Krooss Room 3 had a fantastic Halloween and Dia de los Muertos! We started the day with the Halloween Parade, had a small class party, visited the Shaberg library for a lesson on Dia de los Muertos, and did our own Dia de los Muertos art project.
Room 3 had a fantastic time aboard the Balclutha Ship at Hyde Pier! Our "forty-niners" got to meet a ship captain, merchant, and miner and chose whether they will head off to the Sierra Nevada to go panning, become a mate on a ship, or work in a store in town. We did not find REAL gold, however we did have a lot of fun traveling back in time to 1849 last Friday and today! Last Friday we had our 4th Grade Gold Panning Day. Both 4th grade classes were able to pan for gold outside their classrooms, shop in a General Store with Miner Money, and keep track of their experience in their journals. I am so proud of all the hard work they have been doing in PBL, their knowledge of the Gold Rush was evident on panning day. Students knew how to pan, shouted "Eureka!" when they found gold, and knew what supplies to purchase in the General Store. They did a wonderful job using their knowledge of math, history and team work. Today, we were very lucky because we went on our first field trip. We went to the San Francisco Maritime Museum at Hyde Street Pier, where we boarded a real Clipper Ship. Students became part of the ship's crew and followed orders from the Captain! They used nautical language, teamwork and their Gold Rush knowledge. While there they took on the roles of sailors, miners and merchants. At the end of the day they had to choose which job they would like, and were given their "fates" on a piece of paper. Some students were successful, and some wanted to change their decision when they found out their fate! It was a beautiful day filled with learning and fun. As always, thank you for your donations, as they make these trips possible! Also, thank you to my parent/grandparent chaperones - it was wonderful to have extra help on this trip! Best, Ms. Gomez Gold Panning and Field Trip Pictures
On Tuesday, Ms. Krooss' class had our first monthly talent show. The talent show provides students with an opportunity to showcase their many skills and interests, and especially those talents that aren't always part of our general curriculum. Students also practice their communication and presentations skills, and they work on being a kind, caring, and supportive audience. I am very proud of our first presenters and the entire class for their support! Our talents included: Joy's card tricks, Alejandro and Ryan's card tricks, Amaris and Isabella's singing, Elizabeth's flags, Tammy's singing, and Mauricio, Brian, and Justin's soccer tricks.
I already look forward to our November talent show! Love, Ms. Krooss Today, Room 3 met our buddy class: Mrs. Torres' Kindergarten! We had a fantastic time making Jack-O-Lanterns and reading to our buddies. We look forward to visiting our buddies throughout the year!
Last Friday, Ms. Suzannah visited fourth grade straight from 1849. We had a wonderful time!
