We just finished our study on electricity, magnetism and energy conversion! Each week students learned and applied new scientific vocabulary. Students were able to answer different questions each week and build on their knowledge. They had to work in collaborative groups to build circuits, study famous inventors and create an invention. I was so inspired by their enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge throughout the unit. Today, they presented their inventions at our 3rd Annual Invention Convention - WOW did they do a fantastic job! Each student came prepared, knew their roles and presented their pitch with ease! If you were unable to attend, pleas have your child log into their google account, and you can see their groups website. Below there are pictures of their work throughout the unit and from today.

Happy New Year! Wow! I cannot believe it is already January! We have had a very fun, busy and educational first week back to school. I am so impressed at how quickly the students returned to their routines and how eager they were to get back on track. I have enjoyed hearing about what they did over break, sharing stories and spending time together again.
It has also been very exciting getting to know our student teacher! We are so lucky to have Ms. Anke Rademacher in our classroom this semester. She is currently getting her teaching credential at NDNU and will be working in our classroom. The Huskies have been very welcoming and enjoy sharing information about our classroom with her. This week in Room 2 we have been busy with Reading, Writing, Spelling, PBL and Math. Here is some information about what we have been doing and some pictures too! In Reading Workshop we have been discussing Point of View and all Guided Reading Groups have started new Chapter Books! We have also enjoyed incorporating PBL into our Reading Workshop. We have been reading some very interesting and educational books that tie into our current mini unit on the Civil Rights Movement. I have enjoyed hearing the connections students are making to themselves, current events, historical events, and books we have read. They are so eager to learn more and I look forward to updating you on their learning journey. In Math, we are continuing our study of Long Multiplication. Our current Math Talks have been full of mathematical discussions and reasoning. In Writing, we are continuing to review skills and apply them to our paragraph about Goals for 2016. I know that they will all work hard to achieve the goals they have set, and I look froward to sharing their final paragraphs with you soon. It looks like 2016 will continue to be busy in Room 2 - more learning and fun to come in Fourth Grade! Love, Ms. Gomez I can't believe October is already over! We have had a busy end of the month, filled with lots of learning and fun. The Huskies had their first buddy event with Ms. Malari's Kindergarten class. The Fourth Graders brought some of their favorite books up to room 28 where they read to their buddies and made some pumpkin art. Please look at the pictures below to see the students reading, crafting and getting to know one another! Our first classroom celebration was for Halloween yesterday. The Huskies were again able to pair up with their Kinder Buddies and walk in their costumes together at the Roosevelt Parade. I loved seeing all the creative, adorable and sometimes spooooky costumes. After the parade, we had a small celebration in Room 2. I was so impressed by their creative Halloween themed answers for Scatergories, their excitement over BINGO, and loved watching them make some Halloween crafts. All in all, it was a fun and exciting day for the Huskies! We are 9 weeks into the school year and we have been very busy in Fourth Grade! Here are some long over due updates from Room 2! Our First Field Trip! Our first field trip was a HUGE success! Thank you to all the families the came on the trip, and to everyone for the late pick up. It was a long day, but full of learning and fun. Here are some pictures of their exploring on the island . . . Reading, Reading and More Reading! We LOVE to read in Room 2! Students have been using various reading strategies and reading all genres of books. Students have recently started to study Non-Fiction books and have practiced reading with someone else. Everyone is hard at work to make their first A.R. Goal. We already have 8 students at their goal and everyone is supporting one another to make their goal. Great work Huskies! Math Workshop Every day students are growing in math. They are learning how to work independently, together and think critically. We often remind ourselves to persevere and find new ways to problem solve. I have enjoyed watching them develop new math skills and have fun while learning. Here is a look at a Place Value lesson to review what they have learned. PBL: California Here we Come! Howdy ya'll! We have been traveling back in time to 1849 to study the California Gold Rush. The Huskies have been studying the different routes miners took to get to California, what San Francisco was like before, during and after the Gold Rush, and last week they even panned for GOLD! We will have our final presentation next month, please look out for the invention that will be sent home. Picture Day and Other Fun Picture day is always a fun day for everyone. Early in the morning we took a class picture, but we also took a professional one at the end of the day. Students have also started Music, Art and Library. I hope to get some photos of Music and Library, but here are some Art pictures. Also, as a reminder, if you have not signed up, the REMIND app is a great way to stay in contact and receive quick updates about Room 2.

Here are a few snapshots of what we've been doing in the classroom. Reading, Reading, Reading! We have been working on reading skills during our daily "Reading Workshop." Students are also focused on EVERYONE making their first AR goal! Only four weeks into our nine-week goal, 9 students have already made their goals! Go Dolphins! MathWe are finishing up our unit on place value to the millions and long addition and subtraction. Additionally, we do daily "Math Talks" and are on our second "Problem of the Month" (a challenging, interactive problem that students solve over many weeks). I have been so impressed by the students' thinking! Project Based Learning: California Here We Come!We are busy learning about the 1849 Gold Rush! Students have been learning history as well as presentation skills and how to collaborate in a group. In the pictures below, they built puzzles with their new PBL groups to practice positively working together and how to respond to challenges. They also performed skits on how miners travelled to California, made posters on how San Francisco changed due to the Gold Rush. We still have LOTS of fun to come, and have done a few other activities I forgot to document! Friday Afternoon Fun!The students were so fantastic this past week that we got a little extra time Friday afternoon to go enjoy the sun together and play kickball (as the "Claim Jumpers" vs the "Forty-Niners"!)... What a great team!
Love, Ms. Krooss Fourth grade had a FANTASTIC field trip to Angel Island! We were lucky to travel on a beautiful, sunny day. Thank you so much to all the volunteers who helped chaperone and parents for the late pick-up! Ms. Krooss' class had a wonderful second and third weeks of school! We spent a lot of time learning new reading strategies, reviewing how to write paragraphs, and learning about numbers in the millions. We have also been busy with our first "mini" PBL unit on immigration to California. Some quick updates: - Back to School Night is this Tuesday, September 15th! We will have our class potluck from 5-6pm, then our presentation from 6-6:30. - Accelerated Reader (AR) starts tomorrow, September 14th! Look out for a letter with your child's reading score and goal. If it does not reach home, let me know and I can email it to you. - Please remember to play JiJi at home! JiJi is part of students' math homework and really helps students accelerate through our math curriculum. - Our first field trip to Angel Island is Friday, October 2nd from 8am-5pm. We will get to ride a ferry, visit the Immigration Station and explore the island. We need chaperones! If you are able to join us on this fun day, please let me know.
